Lasiter seemed sincere in his statement. Either he was a good liar, he was not told, or his illness was effecting his memory...


A'amon gave the Venasian equivalent of a shrug. "There was the strong implication that our scientists purposely added the lapizine result to the report in order to discredit the Federation survey."

"I see. I'll be sure to inquire just what prompted them to say that. Now, General, if you will excuse my curiosity. Just what occured between the Venasians and the Ramesar that would cause the reaction we saw from their Emissary?"

"The Venasians and Ramesar have a history, Admiral," A'amon said, "It goes back several hundred of your Earth years. Luckily, we stumbled upon the Ramesar during a deep-space exploration, and after that initial meeting - which was unpleasant - we each retired to our section of the galaxy and refrained from bothering each other. Indeed, this is the first encounter we have had with them since except for a few incidental squirmishes along trade routes."
