>"Welcome to Starbase 54. Your arrival is quite a surprise....", Van Der
> Loo said to the group.
David assumed an at-ease position, hands clasped behind his back. He still
maintained a stoneface but inside he wanted to beat the hell out of
Vanderloo
Jared smiled. "Thank you for greeting us so quickly, Mr. Van Der Loo.
After our talk yesterday, I thought it might be prudent to visit your
station. You left me with a number of unanswered questions. I thought
had not other
alternative to look into things myself."
Van Der Loo bristled as the use of "mister". It is the way to address
junior officers in lieu of rank. Most definitely *not* the way to address
an
admiral of any flavor. The slight did not go unnoticed.
"Greeting you, was the least I could do. I hope you find answers to the
questions that you have. Whether you like them or not. Mr. Abrams will be
your liaison while you are here on the station.", he said looking at a
particular LCDR that was with him.
"Good luck, *Admiral*."
Jared was almost amused at the verbal warfare going on between Van Der Loo
and himself. Somehow, it seemed like a good way to start things off. He
glanced toward Abrams and nodded. "I was hoping that we might begin our
investigating by sitting down with you and going over some details. As CO
of this sector, you have a number of resources coordinated here for you that
could
help us, particularly since everything has to go across your desk for
approval
before being sent on to SFC."
"If I only had the time. Meeting you and your party here is delaying an
intelligence briefing. Mr. Abrams will get you on the schedule.", answered
Van
Der Loo. They were getting the impression that cooperation was his top
priority.
"I am not sure you understand. This investigation has been ordered by the
CinC himself. I would think that he expects you to do what is necessary to
help it come to a quick conclusion." Jared eyed his fellow-Admiral. He was
not going to back down on this. "Perhaps sitting in on this intelligence
report will provide my team with some insight on how things are going in this
region."
"I'm sure that you don't understand. Investigations, whether they are
conducted by JAG, the IG, or some other group take a second chair to
operations. I will be more than happy to sit down with you and your team, but
at a time when the demands of day to day operations will allow. That is per
Starfleet regulations, and I would think the CinC expects me to follow
regulations. As to attending the Intellignece briefing... That would be a no.
The Starfleet JAG, IG, and medical corps don't have the necessary clearance.
If you would find it helpful to have a declassified copy of the report, I'll
see to it that you get it. For whatever good it will do you."
Abrams was not a moron, and could see things degerating quickly. He decided to
overstep his bounds...
"If I may, Admirals, the Intell briefing typically lasts an hour or so.
There is time in your schedule for a brief session, about 30 minutes, before
Col. Stark and Col. Markham call in for their reports.", Abrams said finishing
by looking at Van Der Loo. After a ever so brief pause he turned to Jackson,
"In the meantime, sir, you and your team could get settled in. Perhaps I could
brief you on the situation, and perhaps even set up some interview times with
other personnel..."
