that seemed to defy gravity. She was also chewing gum and, for some reason,
the eraser on an old fashioned pencil. "Were you kids all set to order?"
"Ladies first."
"Thank you," she replied. "I would like a grilled chicken salad, cajun
style and another green tea, please."
The waitress, whose nametag revealed her as Bessie nodded. "I think we can
handle that, Missy. Was there a certain type of dressing you would like?"
"Oil and vinegar would be nice, if you have it." Audra always preferred her
oil and vinegar to be fresh rather than replicated. Somehow, replicated
olive oil always seemed to come out like maple syrup in consistency. "We get it
straight from Greece," replied the waitress with a smile. "Would there be
anything else."
Audra shook her head.
Bessie than turned her attention to Joe. "And what can I get for you?"
"What's the special, ma'am?"
"Well, Tex, has prepared a nice shepherd's pie, but you might want to stay
away from that. We also have a nice Texas sized burger with all the fixing
that would probably be a bit safer." Bessie blinked and it was clear that she
was pulling his leg. There was nothing dangerous about the pie, though, it
wasn't the tastiest.
"I'll go with the burger, and another iced tea to drink. Can I get bacon on that burger?"
"Of course, hun," she replied. "Give me a couple of minutes, and I will be right back with the food. It will be even less for the drinks. I just have to drop by the kitchen to to drop of your order before I grab them." She left with a smile on her face.
"I have to admit this place always seems to have the most interesting people working here," said Audra as she watched Bessie walk off. It was not meant as an insult. Just a side comment. The staff seemed to be part of the entertainment.
