Do a fstat -u <username> for the user that spamd is running as and see if there are huge numbers of open files. I was getting a very similar problem to this and resolved it by increasing the openfile limit for the spamd user. It does however point to a bug in spamd somewhere, I think. Why would the spamd child completely hang when getting an error like this: Cannot open bayes databases /var/spool/spamassassin/bayes_* R/O: tie failed: Too many open files razor2 check skipped: Too many open files IO::Socket::INET: Bad protocol 'udp' at /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.3/Mail/SpamAssassin/Dns.p m line 409, <GEN6> line 702.
