Bayes is not the be all and end all of anti-spam techniques, rather another tool in the box.

in order to get around %99.5 trap of spam I've got bayes as well as the default rules, Chris's and other's rules from the emporiam and a couple of home grown and a couple of network RBL tests

if I turn off bayes, the 'hit' rate goes down to around 95%.

To get qmail working with spamassassin, you might to investigate MailScanner (www.mailscanner.info) as a glue between the two. There has been some success with this lately - checkout the email list archives.

Commercial offerings have their advantages and disadvantages.

Some require very little admin, even compared with the 20 mins a day I do on my MailScanner/spamassassin/clamav/sophos/exim/freebsd system - most of that is reading the email lists for updates, helping others etc.

ALL have a direct cost more than an SA based solution - I'm getting quotes around the $7-10k a year mark for my 100 or so users. 20 mins of my time a day is easy to bury in the figures

Can anyone make a statement on this? I may have to buy a commerical
product because I cannot get spamassassian to do it with my
configuration - we currently use qmail-scanner.

You might look at other bayes programs. I am unable to get bayes to work (not from lack or trying) so I use bogofilter from procmail. Anything that gets through SA (about 10% of spam) has to go through bogofilter. The two combined catch about 2000 spam a day and let about 2-3 through.
