Looks like the database is/was corrupt.
I've renamed the .spamassassin_seen and .spamassassin_toks files as .bak, and now the sa-learn commands run just fine.

Just for future troubleshooting reference, it always helps to shut off the potential problem causers in local.cf to figure it out. For example, change use_bayes 1 to use_bayes 0. Or, to shut off network tests (to eliminate DNS and whatnot), dns_available no, etc. It's a quick way to determine the cause of your problem. HTH
