That's not true. The auto-learn feature will build up the Bayes database using thresholds for ham and spam as determined by the regular rules. Once there is enough tokens in the database, SA will start sending email through Bayes.

As for the original question of how long, I can't really answer that. It depends on the amount of email recieved and how often emails reach the ham and spam thresholds. It seems to me that it took my install (filtering for about 400 email addresses) about two weeks before Bayes kicked in, but that's a guess based on my vague recollections.

The process can be speeded up by feeding a publically available corpus.
