Hi folks,

I've just joined having finally got around to installing SA on my system
running SuSE 8.2. It's taken a bit of Googling to get things going,
especially with having to edit the init.d script for SuSE 8.2. So I just want
to check that I'm on the right track.

SA and spamd/spamc all seem to be installed fine and running. I use Kmail and
have set up a filter to pipe mail through spamc, and that seems to be
happening fine too.

However, I receive mail in a couple of ways. I have lots of email addresses.
With some I download directly from POP3 servers using Kmail, so that's
straightforward. With others, I use Fetchmail (run as a cron job) to retrieve
from POP3 servers. For the most part (though not exclusively) I then use
Kmail to read this mail. Now, if I set up .procmailrc for each user to run
incoming mail through SA, that means it's going to get checked a second time
when I read the email with Kmail - is that right?

I've set up a filter in Kmail which sits just above the one that pipes mail
through spamc. This filter looks for the header 'X-Spam-Checker-Version' to
see if it contains 'SpamAssassin' and if so, writes a new header (pretty
arbitrary, just to give it something to do) and stops. I *think* this should
prevent the mail getting run through SA again because it shouldn't reach that
filter.

Am I on the right track, or is there a more elegant way to do this?

BTW, this is a personal system running as a mail server for a home network (5
users).

Any recommendations for web sites that give a definitive guide to running SA
in language that a non-geek like me can understand would be most welcome. I
guess at some point I'm going to want to starting tweaking stuff.
