SpamBayes isn't involved in the send or receive processes at all, so  
there shouldn't be any way that SpamBayes caused that.

This sounds rather like some sort of conflict with avast! (which I am  
not familiar with at all).  If you disable avast! and enable  
SpamBayes, does it then work?

What is avast! (i.e. what does it do)?  It's possible that something  
could be done if they are conflicting.
