The opt-out system doesn't work because (and I'm sure you know this)
A) Most 'spammers' don't in any way respect opt out's,
B) Multiple Databases exist, and you cannot remove your self from ALL of
them.

Part A we all know about.
Part B - I tried an experiment. I collected several months worth of junk
mail, and then sent postcards (my money) as a form letter with a cut-out of
my information from their junk mail, asking them nicely to remove me from
their databases.

I had a lot of time on my hands then. There were about 40 letters I sent
out. I kept a record of them. Most of them complied, and for a while I got
very little junk mail. But it slowly started creeping back in. A year and a
half later, most (not all!) of the advertising mail was back, and I sent
another round of postcards out, warning them that this is the second time,
and I don't appreciate being back on their list.

I'm still getting credit card applications from everybody. Usury. I swear
banks have turned into gambling casinos without the chance of winning.

Businesses subscribe to lists (I did once for a company) and these lists
HONOR opt-outs, but so many companies provide these lists there is no way to
completely block your name from all lists. So when CitiBank decides to buy
yet another update of a list, it has been infected from other lists that
DIDN'T get the opt out I sent to CitiBank. Bad data keeps feeding into the
system.

Most of my postal mail I consider to be legitimate spam. They are more or
less well intentioned, but cannot keep their records straight, because of
the complexity of the system.

E-mail control of addresses? Never.

I wonder rhetorically how much postal mail is sent to dead people? What
would the dollar amount be? My Aunt, at 89 yrs old gets mail for her husband
who died two years ago and she swears to me it drives her crazy.

Even if we TRIED to run E-mail advertising ethically... I hate to say it
would never work, and may never even come close.
