Hey, thanks to those who have responded to the white list thread.
We're already uncovered some of the real problems involved with white listing. What I'd hope is that we could examine these real obstacles in context. That is, compare them fairly to the costs, inconveniences, and controversies that are given to us by the current system. We can't dismiss a possible solution to spam simply because we find a problem with it. If we use that procedure we would certainly have to toss the current system directly in to the trash bin! :-) If you'd like, try this on for size. <BEGIN FANTASY HERE> Imagine that we already lived in a closed mailbox, white list email world. Everybody has control of their own mailbox. Six year old girls don't receive emails describing mail anatomy enhancement. Now I come along and post to this group suggesting that we change to from this imaginary white list world to the system that we currently use to manage email. In this fantasy, I suggest we open our mailboxes to any idiot in the world who wants access to them and accept the fact that great volumes of limited bandwidth will be eaten up by the new spamming industry that will spring up. Imagine me suggesting that we take on billions of dollars, and millions of man hours per year of new expense fighting to keep the idiots out of our mailboxes. Imagine that these expenses will be passed on to you personally, hidden in your ISP and telephone bills etc. Me, this imaginary buffoon, further proposes that we create a mountain of new controversy between ourselves and these idiots, and between ourselves and ourselves as we try to sort out who is a spammer and who isn't. Let's all get at each others throats, shall we? </END FANTASY HERE> OK, I could go on and on but you get the idea. Imagine how little respect you'd give my views if I proposed the system we already use! An examination of white listings real faults is not that useful, imho, unless we compare those faults to the problems associated with the main alternative, the crazy system we currently are using. Thanks for the thread!
