You're describing something like Choose Your Mail

It sounds really good, but (and I can't remember what it is) I remember
reading discussion of this elsewhere and it's got its faults.  Perhaps
some of the more technical-minded folk here can summarize.

I've had friends get very excited about it and download the software,
set it up, and use it.  None of them use it anymore.  The most cogent
answer I received when I asked one fella why not was "I was annoying
people I didn't want to annoy."
