I have been using the CALDAV sync between iCal and Google Cal since it
came out this past Summer and have had no real issues. I also have no
issues syncing them to my iPhone through iTunes either. So I am not
sure why you think I can't sync to my iPhone using the CALDAV sync as
opposed to SpanningSync. So far the only extra benefit that Spanning
Sync seems to offer over CALDAV is Contact syncing which a very nice
extra added feature. Google may end up offering that as an option as
well but for now does not.
