Doug- Yes--those characters are valid Unicode characters that should be invisible, but some applications don't properly display them. We're working on a way to get rid of them permanently, but in the mean time you can disable Address Book Compatibility Mode in Spanning Sync to get rid of them:
(note that this process will clear all Gtalk chat lists and contact groups in Google) * In Spanning Sync, turn contact syncing off then back on * Select Gmail compatibility mode * In the Advanced tab, click "Replace Data on Google" and choose "Contacts" * Sync Please let me know if you have any questions or run into any problems.
