Doug-

Yes--those characters are valid Unicode characters that should be
invisible, but some applications don't properly display them. We're
working on a way to get rid of them permanently, but in the mean time
you can disable Address Book Compatibility Mode in Spanning Sync to
get rid of them:

(note that this process will clear all Gtalk chat lists and contact
groups in Google)

* In Spanning Sync, turn contact syncing off then back on
* Select Gmail compatibility mode
* In the Advanced tab, click "Replace Data on Google" and choose
"Contacts"
* Sync

Please let me know if you have any questions or run into any
problems.

Thanks,
Charlie
