Ah....right you are.

I can appreciate the reason, but I would call it a bug that it simply
deleted a significant number of my contacts from my Mac address book.

I have recovered some that I know were missing by moving them to My
Contacts in gmail, but I am left in a position of not being sure who
else might be missing.
