My MacBook has been bedeviled for quite some time by horrible
performance. The system freezes for several seconds (as much as 15 or
20), sometimes as frequently as every minute or so. Shame on me for
putting up with this for so long, but I've finally started to try and
track down the problem. It's still very preliminary, but it looks like
the culprit is Spanning Sync. I'm going to spend a few more days
confirming that it really is Spanning Sync, but, in the meantime, has
anyone else experienced this problem. The symptoms are spinning beach
balls everywhere. I notice the problem more in Chrome (or Safari, when
I use that) and Mail.

My configuration is a bit unusual: I use a non-admin account, have
FileVault enabled, and live behind God knows how many firewalls.
Still, all of those things *should* be okay, even in combination.

Originally, I had SS set to never change iCal, sync every 10 minutes,
and sync all events. (I've never synced tasks or contacts.) As part of
my troubleshooting, I'll try to decrease the frequency and only sync
newer events.

FWIW, It's hard to tell just based on the SS messages (in the bottom
of the preference pane), but if you believe those messages, on a
manual sync it spends over 15 seconds "Waiting for Apple Sync
Services..." Anecdotal only, but it seems like I see that message a
lot when I check the SS menu bar status as well.

As noted, I want to do some more detailed troubleshooting and confirm
that SS is the problem before escalating anything to tech support, but
if anyone else has similar experiences, I'm be interested in hearing.
