Well, although it kind of takes SS out of the loop, you could
configure your iPad and iPhone to simply sync with Google Calendar
directly via CalDAV.  Instructions can be found at

On the iOS devices, it works pretty well, although you don't get any
kind of "push" -- instead it will sync up when you open the Calendar
app.

This doesn't really solve getting Google Calendar into iCal itself,
mind you. Although you can set up iCal to access Google Calendar via
CalDAV, the results are pretty ugly for secondary calendars, which
each alternate calendar being placed in its own calendar group.
