I don't use iCloud to sync my contacts to iPhone/iPod. I set up google
as an exchange server on my iOS-devices. So they sync with google
contacts and calendar. With the help of spanning sync, google its my
contact and calendar cloud:

iMac/MacBook <> Spanning Sync <> Google <> Exchange <> iOS
