This is an Apple bug that, as far as we can tell, was introduced with 10.7.2. If you delete ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache and then sync, the deleted items will sync over but it will soon start failing again. We've notified Apple of the problem (bug # 10635411) and are awaiting their response. I'll be sure to update this thread when we hear from them.
