Thanks Alexios for the reminder of the scope of GoC, it's been awhile since
I've submitted proposals to this program.
Added Gopi, because I think creating a proposal around the Automated
AI/Dataset tool that he and Elyas have under development which is soon to be
released publicly has opportunities for the GoC program. Example Elyas was a
student with little knowledge about SPDX, but he is now a respected contributor
in SPDX Working Groups. An idea, that might be of interest for GoC 2026
submission, is but Gopi/Elyas might have others. Create an agent where you can
ask which SDPX field(s) is used for say document SHA-256 checksum. Ie, we
automate our mapping exercises that we seem to do on a regular basis. My
observation is we currently lose newcomers because the spec is 200+ pages and
growing. This agent could start to help navigate the knowledge graph that we
now have. From a students point of view, learning how to build an agent to
perform human-like tasks is a marketable skill to obtain. Just a thought, and
I think this fits within the parameters that Alexios mentions.

Please, keep in mind, that the goal of Google Summer of Code is introducing
new people to Open Source projects and communities. It is not a way to fund
development of tasks for projects.
The complexity of the SPDX project means that you have to find people who are
interested in the topic and then learn, in the course of the project, a rather
large amount of knowledge: maybe RDF, definitely SBOM (presumably they already
know Python/ JavaScript/ programming), and of course all things SPDX.This is
not a light task for the candidate — nor for the mentor, I should add, who will
be teaching all this.
I should also point out, unfortunately, the extensive use of AI for proposal
submission —last year we had more than double the usual amount— which makes it
extremely hard to judge.
If we were to apply to be an organization for GSoC projects, there is a great
deal of work to be done beforehand, and there should be mentors who have
committed to work throughout the program duration.I, personally, cannot yet
commit to this effort.

great idea. This is what is possible working together! What project would be an
option? Here are a couple of suggestions for Google-summer-of-code:
Shacl to code
Spec parcer - shacl parser markdown
SPDX 3.X libraries for Python
SPDX online tools V3.X conformance

SPDX has a Google Summer of Code project ideas history at
https://github.com/spdx/GSoC
(last updated in 2024; PR for 2025 is at https://github.com/spdx/GSoC/pull/17 )
We can put ideas for 2026 in this same repo.
