would have expected Spectra to use the existing objects as defined in the
Site Layout Model, rather than create new ones. Any ideas? Is there an
easier way of copying an entire application?
What we do is to copy the code then copy database(s) in their entirety to
the destination machine using the SQL DTS wiz, create the database
connections, create the application in the webtop with the same config as
the original, ie name and DB, etc., then just run the pages, starting withe
the top/home page, and all is well. If the application naming is not
identical then it will break. If the structure is not the same, ie paths
and things, then it will break.
We tried many times to develop in a different drive/path setup on the
development machine to the production one, in every case the migration
failed and the work involved in changing paths, etc is so enormous that it
is not worth it. We now make the dev machine a clone of the production one
and all is well every time. Its a real pain as we effectively need a
stand-alone dev machine for every site we are developing, not the best
economics....
One thing I am hoping for in some future version is the ability to run a
site without CF mappings for include files, they are a major limitation in
any sort of multi-site development/production environment.
