You can and should upgrade from Spectra 1.01 directly to 1.51. There is no need from
Spectra's side to upgrade 1.01 to 1.5 and then 1.5 to 1.51. Unless you have a very
good reason to go to 1.5 in the middle, I would avoid the pain of the extra
installation/migration.

I would also start by upgrading to CF5 before doing the migration of Spectra. The
Spectra migration seems to run better under CF5. I believe this is due to the
increased speed of CF5.

I would in all cases think about the need to upgrade versus doing a full install of a
newer version. This goes for Spectra and CF both. There is nothing to migrate
forward in CF5 from CF4.51, except an advanced security policy store. If you do not
have advanced security or you have never created a lot of security rules and policies
just install new. Create a new policy store and redo your security policies, if
necessary. If you have lots of security, then migrate it from 4.51 to cf5. Again use
KB 21551 to avoid the known policy store migration issues.

Similarly, always consider whether you really need to install Spectra 1.51 as an
upgrade or as a new installation. The new installation goes much more easily. You
can migrate your 1.01 and 1.50 CODBs and applications from a new 1.51 installation.

Your only loss with the new installation is CFAObjects will be a new database, not a
migrated version. The only things lost here should be your userprofiles and
applications objects. For many people recreating some userprofiles and application
objects will be far less painful then trying to migrate a full Spectra 1.01 or 1.5
installation to 1.51. Migrating cfaobjects forward seems to be the most problematic
part of a Spectra upgrade. The upgrade of an application CODB seems far less prone to
problems when done using a new cfaobjects and on CF5.

The one time you may really be stuck doing a 1.51 installation as an upgrade is if you
have created your application(s) using cfaobjects as the CODB, instead of using
application specific CODBs.

Subject: Re: Upgrade CF451sp2 to CF5?

I was running spectra 1.01 lasttime on Solaris 7, did an upgrade to spectra 1.5 and
then did an upgrade to 1.5.1 and then upgrade my CF from 4.5.2 to 5. Extra thing to do
was create another
instance on Netscape LDAP to store my policy.

That's it.
