Find out what the variable in the error is.  Use cfdump or cfa_dump, if needed.


I saw this once on an cfldap issue.  The template was written for CF5 and worked.  CFMX balked with your error because the server attribute for cfldap was a variable named 'server'.  So, CFMX thought the server scope (a structure) was being passed.
