V9 has moved to use inference handlers rather than watches for load
calculations. For ethernet ports they include an element for the ethernet
framing in the byte count when calculating load. For this reason they use the
packet count as well as the octet count. Unfortunately there appears for be
bugs in various Cisco IOS releases that impacts the packet counters. This
causes the crazy values you are seeing.
We have implemented a work around by creating a watch that just uses the octet
count and then using policy manager to zero the load thresholds and enable that
watch on ethernet ports on impacted routers.

We have also raised this with Cisco and have new code releases where this issue
is resolved.

Hope this helps.

Rory

Subject: [spectrum] Interesting issue with port utilization alarms

Hi
Running Spectrum 9.1 and monitoring a number of network devices
Set up port utilization alarms on netwrok device ports and have been receiving
some unusual errors on the % utilization, I know that in some cases its
possbile on virtual ports to have utilization values that exceeed 100% but we
have been having alarms in excessive ranges - see the following examples

EventMessage: Fri 28 Aug, 2009 - 12:00:39 - Threshold Exceeded for
TOTAL LOAD for an unacceptable duration. The threshold value is 90 %,
and the current value is 139581 %. Model Type = Cat29_IF_Port, Name =
LH01SW02_Fa0/11. (event [0x00011337])

EventMessage: Fri 28 Aug, 2009 - 11:37:21 - Threshold Exceeded for
TOTAL LOAD for an unacceptable duration. The threshold value is 90 %,
and the current value is 103 %. Model Type = Gen_IF_Port, Name =
JS-3845-01c.powerco.co.nz_Vl128. (event [0x00011337])

any thoughts or tips as to reason why much appreciated (especially on the 1st
one of 139581%)

Thanks
