This was told to me from a couple of solutions architects from CA, when they
were out at a site where I work. The recommendation against it is not for
technical reasons, but for management reasons; the little differences between
UNIX and Linux, or UNIX and Windows presents some "gotchas" that make it easier
to make mistakes, and also require extra care in setting up your customizations
and scripts to work around those little differences. Most of Spectrum is in
Java, so from that point of view, it is similar across platform, but managing
it requires a strong platform knowledge, so care and good design are required.

Why it's not recommended ? I can't find anything related in the official docs
to say
anything about it.
