Also, CA Support told me, in v8.x any Interface threshold polling (error
rate, utilization rate) uses expensive SpectroWatch style calculations.

In v9 this is changed and improved. If you are polling a lot of
interfaces in v8, this will contribute to load.

Hello Lalit,

We ran into notification latency and crashing in 8.1 when the
SpectroServer was extremely busy, and/or was receiving a large number
(millions) of traps per day.

The server hardware was new and very powerful, but as we added more
devices and servers to monitor, the load became too much.

(You didn't specify how long this environment has been in use, so I am
speculating that it might be similar issue.)

CA Support has a sizing tool that can advise whether you are over-taxing
your environment.

They will ask you for things such as:

* Number of models in your SSDB

o IIRC, 100,000 is a lot, but 200,000 may be too much

*         Number of events/day

o We were killing the server at 4 million event/day. 2 million was
tolerable but CA wanted us to get it lower.

*         Number of traps/day

o Are you receiving TRAP STORM alarms on any devices? Are Cisco Syslog
messages blasting your server? We had to silence some trappy devices.

*         Number of active SpectroWatches

o This is hard to compute, but CA may be able to help you (it's been a
while and I do not recall an easy way to count the active ones).

* Your SpectroServer CPU / RAM specs

When we moved to version 9, the improved threading reduced the load on
the SpectroServer by 10%.

That and silencing the chatty devices brought performance back to
normal.

HTH,

Subject: [spectrum] Spectrum Latenecy

Hi List,

We are using spectrum 8.1 (SP2) in our environment. Last week, spectrum
was crashed and then we restarted spectrum server. Since then, spectrum
working fine but having lot of delays in discovery any device, putting
device in maintenance or getting device unreachable alarm.

I have checked SS Performance table which shows Notification Latency
around 800 sec.

Does any one faces this problem? Any idea, how could I possibly check
why spectrum having so much delays?

Thanks

Lalit
