Because Solarwinds Orion isn't doing much out of the box other than
up/down status it's quick to get going but you have to map traps and set
up loads of stuff that Spectrum just does. Even then it hasn't got the
inteligence.

The java Oneclick interface is eons better than the web based interface
on Solarwinds which is messy and hits you with lots of minor
non-essential information. As well as that because it's web based: 1. It
refreshes on you just as you are trying to do something - really
irritating! and 2. Navigatation is long winded.

Solarwinds doesn't have fault isolation so loads of red alarms if one
upstream device fails. Yes there is a manual alert suppression facility
but if you have been unfortunate enough to have done this on any system
you'll just love Spectrum.

Solarwinds selling point is that they add lots of point solutions such
as Wireless management but to be really honest it's a bit like putting
flashy wheels on a cheap car compared to Spectrum.

That's not to say that Solarwinds isn't useful, we have both products,
but you cannot seriously consider the two products as competition for
each other - it's horses for courses.

Solar Winds is easier to set up and has a better looking GUI, but it
lacks some enterprise capabilities, and does not scale well past
small/medium enterprise.
