We evaluated SolarWinds as a potential Spectrum/eHealth replacement and were fairly disappointed by it. I felt that customizations were generally easier in SolarWinds than in the CA products, but the rest of it was mostly disappointing. In particular, we had considerable problems with getting the system to remain stable, and it fell apart under polling loads much smaller than our current setup. During the course of the evaluation, it was indicated to us by SolarWinds support that the poller had an effective hard cap of around 8000 elements per poller regardless of the hardware you threw at it, and distributed polling would be necessary to handle an environment of our size.
