I agree with Bill¹s assessment of performance vs. development time. I would add also that there are Perl ( http://search.cpan.org/~plonka/Spectrum-CLI-1.016/CLI.pm ) and Ruby ( http://www.dachsug.ch/wiki/index.php/SpecTools ) wrappers for the CLI so you can use those languages instead of shell scripting. I haven¹t used the Perl wrapper, but I¹ve been very happy with the Ruby one.
If you¹re writing something that will register watches with the SpectroServers, meaning they will push you data instead of you querying them, your only option then is CORBA. I¹ve posted previously on my experiences doing this. ( http://lists.unc.edu/read/archive?id=5761456 ) Finally, if you¹re going to be doing work with the relationships between models, you should know that we¹ve found a bug in the CORBA API that¹s not in the CLI. Basically, the CORBA API may not return all of a model¹s relationships, depending on which side of the relationship you query (i.e. it may tell you that A is a neighbor of B, but not that B is a neighbor of A). CA has accepted this as a bug and a fix is slated for H06.
