Hi again, lots of interesting ideas, thank you for that! I think I will have a closer look at the possibilities Policy Manager can offer - way back when we met the same requirement based on SPECTRUM 6.6 using AlarmNotifier (Christian: Your idea!), there was no Policy Manager (or at least we haven't used it).
Also I remember having heard something about that PollingMultiplier attribute, too. I guess I will search the documentation for that! But to clarify whatever might have been missing in my description: You are of course right that a "clear and reliable" management suffers in any case from polling cycles bigger than 30 minutes or sth. for one cannot identify an outage in time, but what we want to accomplish is to miss short outages on purpose (e.g., not in this case, but generally, think of devices attached via mobile services that might be lost for a few minutes due to network problems!), but keep awareness of "real" problems the devices may be suffering from (i.e., hardware failures etc.). So there's the struggle: Miss short outages and suffer from long lasting alarms whenever SPECTRUM hits an outage and doesn't become aware of any fast re-connect - or make sure an alarm doesn't last long enough to give the impression that a real problem has occured and allow the system to alarm more incidents than necessary... To be frank: One would expect a NMS to be able to do this - poll a device every 5 minutes, in case of outage, poll every 30 seconds. My first thought was I could use a test router and ping via SPM - this way I would be able to configure seperate schedules for normal operation and loss of connectivity. I was asked whether it is possible, and I quote, "to manage devices that tend to be unresponsive for short periods of time, but nevertheless with a reasonable way of getting to know what state the device is in". In other words, we do not want to be BOMBED with ten alarms an hour because the device is unresponsive for three minutes, but always be able to say, yes, it's up again. Discussing the idea, I was unable to answer the following question: In what intervals does SPECTRUM poll an unresponsive device? It is clearly more often than in normal operation, for there are alarms that last less than our 30 seconds standard polling interval. Some tests with varying intervals lead me to the conclusion it is roughly half the configured polling interval. Might this be true? And, more importantly: Can it be configured? In easy words, I need to poll a device once an hour, but once SPECTRUM has detected an outage, I definitely need to know when the device comes up again, and not eventually after 30 minutes. Things like SPM and EventDisp customizing have been discussed already. Due to the dynamic nature of the amount of models affected, it must be an attribute based solution, i.e. something ouf of the box. Thanks a lot for your thoughts!
