Not sure whether this has been posted before, but some people might be 
interested in the results of two RPS programming contests, described

You'll see there that playing randomly is certainly not a good 
strategy, if you actually want to /win/ tournaments!

You can play online against a strong program here:

Apparently it is one of the programs from the contests.  It's more fun 
than you might imagine, if you're not a convert already. :D
