The fastest people do it in 8 or 9 on average, and that's around 2/3 of
their total solve time.

 No.  Just get better at doing them intuitively.  If you're worried about
progress so much and fixated so heavily on taking the easier route just to
get a little better in 2 months, you're not going to try to understand why
the algs work as they do.

Just keep at it, and you will see the times drop.  I cubed incredibly
heavily for about two weeks before my times were down to what they were
before learning F2L.  But without it, I never would have gotten sub-30, much
less sub-20.
