True, some of the 2005 cubes were pretty irregular right out of the box. However, the very latest 2006 DIY cubes are probably some of the nicest parts ever manufactured. So I say they're finally getting better. Hope those parts soon make their way into Hasbro cubes.
As for the 1980s cubes, they varied in quality also. Most likely it will have flat centers, so depending on your twisting style that will have implications for speedcubing.
