Sylvain - you are a star - thanks for your help.

Just to let yo know exactly what I did - (and for the benefit of the rest of
the people here too) :-) And additionally I didn't even have to compile a
thing. First I used your leink to:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/ed.gomez/SpeedTouch-HOWTO-en.html

1. Installed Redhat 7.1 from CDROM (customised with all the extra
development utilities etc). 2. After reboot - immediately upgraded to the
2.4.3- 12 kernel ((ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/updates/7.1/en/os/i386/)
(downloded the kernel, BOOT and SOURCE rpms. installed the SOURCE and BOOT
rpms with the -Uvh option, then the kernel with the -ivh option)

3. updated lilo to include the new kernel (which the rpm does not do :-) as
per usual.

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.3-12
        label=L3
        read-only
        root=/dev/hda1
4. Followed instriuctions on the website from top down - but I skipped any
parts that mentioned patching - it all seems to be in this kernel already.
And that was fine -

One tihng I had to make sure was that the hotplugging was working - so I had
to upgrade that from the sourcefourge website - It installs stuff in the
init.d dir to start it up at boot time - and so far I have no need to run
modprobe commands manually - the hotplug loads them it seems on boot. :-) (I
had to use the --force option on this rpm)
http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/sourceforge/linux-hotplug/hotplug-2001_04_24-1
_6.x.noarch.html
(but there are newer ones out there (not tried out yet for me) :-)

The only thing I have is the following in an executable file called start in
root - which starts up the final part of the connection and initialises ppp0
- noticed I hashed out the modprobes after the hotplug update. I will
probably move the last two lines to the rc.local file when I am sure all is
well :-)

# modprobe ppp_generic
# modprobe ppp_synctty
# modprobe n_hdlc
modem_run -m -f /usr/local/share/speedtouch/mgmt.o
pppd call adsl

Hope this helps you people out there - this adsl business is a real hit and
miss.

Oh - one note as well::: I was doing this on a portable with one USB port -
apparently people with desktops may find it does not work. I have to help
someone else setup - if it works the same way - I will let you all know.

Cheers,

Ronnie
