As I said, it was more a Linux question. I had nade the
mistake of following the /usr/src/linux/README
instructions, which are a joke. The ones in Documentation/
are not much better (and contradict README). Times like
this I remember why I prefer FreeBSD ;).

I would have thought that by 2.2.19 the included docs might
be a bit better, even if they said at the top "these docs
are crap, go and find a HOWTO".

My housemate explained how to remake the system maps,
module-info and initrd stuff. I can now see /proc/bus/usb
but modem_run won't play ball. But it was past my bed
time by then.

I don't know if I have or not. I don't have the patience
for make config, much preferring make menuconfig.

I put FreeBSD 4.4-RELEASE on to download overnight. When I
get back to the machine I'll give it as long as it takes to
burn an ISO to start to work else I'll blow it away and put
FreeBSD ninstead - which I got working before with a fraction
of the hassle I've had with Linux.
