I've done my best to get SpeedTouch running on my Mdk 8.0 (kernel 2.4.3 PPP
2.4.0) but so far had no connection :o/
Sure enough i missed something, but as Newbie i cannot even guess where i
did wrong. Therefore i'm gonna do the whole stuff step by step another time.
not so tough, and yet quicker than to do the stuff partially xx time
<blink>newbie, newbie, newbie !<blink>
Now following another Howto to do so. Johan Verrept's one, which more
detailed than others (guess that's because he's among the few who buid the
module).
Question for u clearer ones :
Can i do it again (as if i did nothing before) or should i stop right now
'cause one won't get nothing but trouble when overwriting a configuration
with slight different Howto ?
Below are the 9 steps as they are in Johan V. Howto.
Please give info / help at the right place (i didn't understand some answers
from ng) :
1. Downloading
J.V. writes about Hotplug-xxxxx-1(.noarch.rpm or .tar.gz)
Well, there's many of versions ('2001-09-19.tar.gz' for exemple) in
SourceForge dl page.
Guess newest's the best, still i'm not sure("2001-19-09 needs kernel 2.4.1
and modutils 2.4.9") Please give info if it's
important to know.
2-to 4. Patching, configuring, building & installing the kernel
typing : $ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.4.3-20mdk #1 Sun Apr 15 23:03:10 CEST 2001
i686 unknown
is that okay to go on ?
5. Building Sppedtouch Kernel Module
--J.V. Howto : "make sure u untar SARLib & Speedtouch packages in the same
directory, otherwise SpT module does not build"
1st time i c that. 'sarlib 0.2.1' currently is in
/usr/src/linux-2.4.3/drivers/usb/sarlib/ and i see 'speedtouch.c' in that
directory (.../drivers/usb/)
Is that correct so far ?
--Can edit 'speedtouch.c' (Howto says: remove '#define DEBUG_PACKET 1'')

6. Installing Hotplugging
7. Installing the Binary Management Application
- What's better : mgmt.o or Alcaudsl.sys (i dlded mgmt 1.4.3) ?
- I created a new directory '/permanent' for Alcaudsl.sys. Do i have to do
smthg like this when untar then install mgmt (actualliy did it in
[user]/Doc/ADSL/, yes i put it there) ?
8. Installing PPPoA
Howto says to install 'ppp-2.4.0b2-2.i386.rpm' daemon. Do i have to get a
new one when pppd-2.4.0 it's allready running (i dlded ppp-2.4.0-patched) ?
9. Configuring the system
I'm not here (yet:o), but how comes J.V. Howto says one has to edit
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets as the '/chap' one, when my adsl provider's runs on
chap (Wanadoo) ?
