Well, it seems this is just what I have asked this afternoon. 
Most of the discussion was in French, though. I plan to sum 
things up when the problem is really solved, hopefully tomorrow.

It *could* be that your USB port doesn't give enough power to 
your modem. Using an USB hub with *external* power supply solved 
the problem for at least two people here. Hopefully, I'll be able 
to test it tomorrow.

OTOH, I have never seen the "host controller halted" message, so 
your problem is perhaps different. I have an Intel motherboard, 
which perhaps explains the differences. You can read my message

to see what I have in my logs. It appears the "timeouts" are 
normal and non-related to the problem.
