Ahh, thats not the unix way. I assume you may need to be logged onto an
ISP's  dial-up to fetch mail (most don't bother BTW). Why not set up a route
to your ISP's POP server that triggers a normal diald/modem call. No need to
have one ppp connection have two and use the routing power of linux :-)

Some scripts do exist that carefully take everything down but I've generally
found anything that involves killing modem_run causes problems. Have a
search  through the mailing list archive for the example disconnect scripts
people have posted.

Did poff cause modem_run to stop. If not a simple "pppd call adsl" should
just restart the link.
