I have similar problems. If I unplug the phone cable, the modem detects 
link down, and then retrains when I plug it back in again, and PPP comes 
up again.
But, every few days, PPP traffic stops being sent over the link.
The speedtch thinks the link is still up, and even removing the phone 
cable does not get it to detect link down. It is as though the speedtch 
has hung. Only a power cycle of the box fixes the problem.

I use the standard linux kernel 2.6.7 modules, and only use the 
modem_run util form the speedtouch utils.
