I have similar problems. If I unplug the phone cable, the modem detects link down, and then retrains when I plug it back in again, and PPP comes up again. But, every few days, PPP traffic stops being sent over the link. The speedtch thinks the link is still up, and even removing the phone cable does not get it to detect link down. It is as though the speedtch has hung. Only a power cycle of the box fixes the problem. I use the standard linux kernel 2.6.7 modules, and only use the modem_run util form the speedtouch utils.
