thanks for your help duncan - nothing has worked so far, i've also been 
pre-occupied lately with trying to build a 2.6 kernel so I haven't tried 
all your suggestions.
If you don't see me first on kernel.org, I'll be back either to tell you 
it's all working or to post more information ... :)
