Hi,
And thanks for your reply: I think I am starting to get the
hang of it, though there are still a few doubts:

But I am using a 2.6.9 kernel -- shouldn't hotplug run properly out-of-the-box
or are there specific tweaks that should be made for Speedtouch?

If my understandig is correct, the choice between PPPoA versus PPPoE is not
really a choice: you must use the service supported by your ISP. It seems
that in my case I must use PPPoE.
Now, if I intend to use the kernel driver + hotplug + PPPoE, what are the
steps that must be followed? This is the part where I am still a bit
confused! My understanding so far is the following:
- hotplug senses the connection of the modem, invoking the script
/etc/hotplug/usb/speedtouch
- This script invokes /usr/bin/speedtouch-start, which takes care
of calling modem_run and other things that I might wish to add
there, such as calling br2684ctl and PPP.
- br2684ctl creates an nas0 interface required for PPP.
- PPP creates the ppp0 interface, authenticates with the ISP,
and establishes the link proper.
Now, is this correct? And what exactly is the role of the kernel driver
in this affair? And where and who takes care of loading the driver?
Plenty of questions, I admit. I do like to know what is happening
exactly with my system!
Thanks in advance for your help!
Regards,
Jean
