If the kernel driver + hotplug solution does not work, I will have to try
the pure user space tools.   However, I have read in one of the many tutorials
that the user space solution has poor performance -- is this true?
Also, I must find some kind of solution which uses hotplugging.  The reason
is simple: the computer where the modem connects does not have a monitor
or a keyboard (it's basically a firewall), and I want the system to be usable
also by the rest of my family, who are not comfortable enough with Linux
to login remotely via ssh to run some script to connect them to the internet.
