At you place, I would first use a more recent kernel than 2.4.18. Try with
2.4.27 as there is a problem with 2.4.28 and 2.4.29 and usb.

Did you know you need pppoatm kernel module with pppoatm.so plugin?
It may too be supported include in the kernel, I have not tried

Add debug in your options, it display only convenient info at connection
start and end.
