Indeed - however on my system (Debian Sid with 2.6.11.8) the files have to be 
named speedtch-X.bin.Y.00 where X is either 1 (boot.bin) or 2 (firmware.bin) 
and Y is the modem revision number (2 or 4). And I put these files into 
/lib/firmware to avoid possible filesystem mount-order problems.
