A common problem people have is that their connection is fine, but they
have no DNS. Pinging an ip address checks that.

I don't know what this ^^^ message means.
Can you please do:
cat /proc/net/atm/speed*
and
/sbin/route -n
Also, please run pppd with the debug option:
pppd call whatever_you_usually_have debug
That should write some more stuff to your system logs.
