this shows that the kernel part of things is working fine: the firmware
has been uploaded to the modem, and your line has been synchronised
with your ISPs hardware down at the exchange. I don't see anything in
your system logs about pppd. If you run the following, what turns up in
your system logs?
sudo pppd call speedtch debug
