Hi - I was trying to follow the instructions for "Linux from Scratch". I had
already tried following the instructions for Fedora Core 4, which didn't
work, so I guessed that I was meant to do the others first.

I was using a copy of the webpage from a couple of months ago, which
included the instruction "rm -rf /etc/init.d" as part of the Hotplug
install. After executing it my Linux system wouldn't boot at all. After
about 4 hours' work I spotted that that was the last command I'd issued. I
guessed that /etc/init.d was just a symbolic link to /etc/rc.d/init.d and
recreated this link in rescue mode. The system then booted once, but now
won't work again. As it won't boot, I don't know how to get to the system
logs to find out what's happening. As far as I can tell, it gets right to
the end of /etc/inittab, where it launches the X11 server, then fails. This
fits with what I see: the monitor keeps resetting, and it doesn't manage to
show my graphical log-on.

Please - any ideas? Has anyone else hit similar problem? I'm intrigued that
the latest version of the website no longer includes the Hotplug, rm init.d
command - annoying that I might have lost my whole system for something that
was unnecessary!

Oh well,
Jon
