I don't think gentoo is the best choice on an so old laptop, as every
compilation will be long, so update will be deadly slow.
I do the same error with a k6-450 and it is very slow to update.
You should prefer a distrib wich distribute packages already compilated.

With full speedtouch usermode driver, (modem_run and pppoa3), you should be able
to connect from every running kernel (from 2.2 branch to 2.6) without the need
to compile a kernel if your provider use PPPoA or PPPoE (in case of PPPoE, you
will need to add a PPPoE package).
