do you mean you were disconnected at this point?  Or did you restart
pppd by hand?

Please recompile and reinstall your kernel with CONFIG_USB_DEBUG=y; that
should produce more info (if you can't recompile your kernel, let me know -
it is possible to just recompile the kernel module, though it's more tricky).
