My SuSE 10.0 PC is running a program for several days now. Until
yesterday, I could succesfully connect to the internet.
I returned this evening and wanted to check out my e-mail.
The Kinternet tool was clicked on and it tried to make the connection. But
it did not succeed. So I checked /var/log/messages:

Mar 18 00:56:34 AtemboPC pppd[12823]: Connect: dsl0 <--> 8.48

There it got stuck.
When it became clear that the connection would not be made, I
right-clicked on Kinternet to give the hangup command and directly
afterwards I clicked on it to try connection again:

It was clear that it was still not going to work and I gave the hangup
command again::

Mar 18 00:57:29 AtemboPC pppd[13151]: Connection terminated.

I pulled out the usb-plug:

And connected it back again.

I had connection again....

Wy does the pulling of the plug and the reconnection of the plug do the work?
